They're a massive drain on your ammo, and are usually slow and easily juked around. Think of them as zombies from resident evil. Juke/avoid turrets and heavy security droids when you can. It's a pure numbers game that hacking loses BADLY on. 6 points in hacking will cost the same as 6 points in heavy or energy weapons, and if you level up those latter two you will have WAAAAY more firepower than what locked ammo crates will give you. The ammo that you would get from hacking crates is not as much as you would get investing in another weapons branch. There is an erroneous piece of advice that people put out about hacking being a near-mandatory skill. I would NOT invest in it, despite what people would tell you. You have probably started the game already, but if you were having trouble there are a couple of newbie traps that unfortunately sometimes get recommended by people:
